Children's Educational Workshops

HandCrafted workshops encourage children to explore their creativity, teaching them that no idea is wrong and they learn by doing.   We operate on a “can do” approach, of ANYTHING is possible.

Workshops can be on various themes: Mosaics, Murals, Painting, Printing, Sculpture and 3D.

See below for some other ideas

We also provide workshops for under fives Crafty LittleDevils and for children with special needs Crafty Little Monkey. Workshops are generally tailor made to the clients needs, but we also have pre-designed workshops that can be adjusted to meet any needs you may have. If you like our ideas, but we haven’t covered something you would like then, give us a call. We like to accommodate!

Workshops can be organised in schools, nurseries, village halls, crèches, county fairs, fetes, country shows or even at home for parties in the garden or on the kitchen table! Workshops come with all materials and equipment needed. For outdoor workshops HandCrafted provide a 3m x 3m gazebo that can easily be erected and dismantled.

*Workshop Option A

Collage Designs’

Children are encouraged to use one of the topics below to create and design a collage using various materials:

Sea life,  Wonderland,  Space and beyond, A day in the life of….. ,  I had a dream that…,  All the colours of the world ,  A Perfect day,

The flowers in my garden,  Natural World

How it works.

The client chooses one of the topics. The children put together individual collage pieces by drawing and sticking images, using materials such as coloured paper, card, newspapers, magazines, felt pen, coloured pencils and PVA glue. Once they have finished their piece, they then seal it with a PVA and water mixture.

This workshop can easily be made more complex or simplified for different age groups abilities. Also, because it is individual work they are able to express themselves exactly as they want. Once dry and finished, the piece can be taken away or displayed.

This workshop’s aim is to help children become more visually aware of their surrounds and to engage their imaginations. It also aims to show children that they can create beautiful things from recycled objects, pieces of coloured paper, tissue paper, card and all sorts. Sea life and Natural world workshops are particularly successful.

*Workshop Option B

Masks’

Masks are the perfect way for children to express their fantasies. They can be who ever they want and can create someone totally new if they like.

This workshop is very popular for its diversity and easy of differentiation.

How it works.

Children are provided with a plain mask template; they can either draw round and cut out their own or work straight on to the mask, (depending on ability) Materials like coloured paper, card, newspapers, magazines, felt pen, coloured pencils, glitter and PVA glue are provided.

*Workshop Option C

 ‘Paper Mache’

(This is a more advanced workshop than option B)

Paper Mache general works best as a mask making workshop and is started in pairs, but is later an individual task. It is an AM or PM session based four week ‘mini course’ for children to get the most out of it. It runs best if there is a theme and an event after at which the masks can be worn. This gives both direction and purpose, which some children find very help when making a longer piece of work.

For example:-

African Art

The Opera House

Flower Festival

Easter

Christmas

Summer

How it works.

Children are provided with the materials needed to make the mask. They start in pairs and cover a balloon in layers of Paper Mache. Once this is dry and set the hard shell is cut in half and each person gets half to turn into their mask. All masks can be coloured or collaged, again with the provided materials.

Materials like coloured paper, felt pen, coloured pencils, magazines, newspapers, tissue paper, paint and glue will be provided.

*Workshop Option D

‘Clay Modelling’

The most popular activity we provide and once of the children’s favourites. However, we require a few things from our host in order to be able to provide this activity

    .

We need:

A flat working area for all children taking part.

Wipe clean surface.

A water source.

Drying area (however, this could be a window sill).

Children and any helpers in suitable, washable clothing.

If any children need special provisions this should be discussed before hand.

How it works.

Each child is given a small amount of clay and helped to create an object of their choice. However, if preferred more direction or a theme can be given. No tools are provided for a reason, we want to encourage the children to see just how effective they can be with ‘only’ their hands. Many children with disabilities feel they are not able to be neat and dexterous. However, clay lends its self to being modelled by inexperienced hands. The results are often stunning

*Workshop Option E

‘Kite Making’

A template is provided for the children to draw round on card and cut out. They are then taken step by step through the kite making process. It is a more difficult workshop as you need to make the kites well enough so that it will actually fly. However, if you would like, we could make them purely decorative purposes, then they can be simplified. Having said that, I think with one to one help flying kites are perfectly achievable.

How it works.

All materials are provided, however there will be a small extra charge per head of about 80p to cover additional costs of the extra materials needed. Together as a group we make the structure of the kite and they children get some ‘free design’ time to decorate their kites. Each one to one helper will get their own copy of the instructions to help them though the building, but it is not very complex.

*Workshop Option F

‘Hat Making’

This is a great activity that is a lot of fun. Children make hats that are fitted to their heads to wear for a particular event or occasion. The best hats tend to be:

Easter Bonnet

Christmas Hats

Spring Celebration Hats

Easter Egg Hunt Hats

Easter, Christmas, Spring, Summer or Arts parade

Arts Festival

Plays or concerts

Plus any other reasons you can think of to make a hat!!!!!

How it works.

Children are asked to design a hat on paper. Then are guided through the steps to measure their heads and are shown how to make the head band. Then they are shown how to create the design they have planned. All card, sticky tape, glue, pens, paint, maker pens and scissors are provided.

Other Workshop Options

There are many other options and if they are activities you are interested please contact me and I will give you more details. But for obvious reasons I have only included a few in detail. Some of the workshops have additional costs to cover materials, but the actually workshop price is stay the same.
